All coronavirus (COVID-19) testing services must meet certain minimum standards set by the government. Private sector testing providers must also complete a statement stating that their testing meets these standards.

Each plan has different minimum standards. For example, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing services on days 2 and 8 must meet different minimum standards than the "general population" testing services for people with no symptoms of COVID-19.

The government has issued guidelines on the minimum standards that private providers of COVID-19 testing services must meet when providing the following services:

Please refer to the relevant attachment above to read the minimum standards applicable to the program.

There are separate guidelines for potential providers on how to become a private provider of COVID-19 testing and be added to the GOV.UK list of testing services you provide.

The guidelines on this page are for private providers of COVID-19 testing. If you are a member of the public looking for a provider, please refer to the provider list on GOV.UK and read our guide on finding and selecting a private COVID-19 test provider.

The minimum standards for COVID-19 private providers have been revised to reflect changes in travel testing effective November 30.
