The NHS expanded the list of officially recognised Covid-19 symptoms, just days after free testing ended in England. Nine new symptoms were added to the original three from the early days of the pandemic, including common ailments such as a sore throat, headaches, and diarrhoea.

The move brought the UK more in line with the advice issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other countries, including the US. But some people say they are still suffering with symptoms not recognised by the official list, such as sore eyes and rashes.

Many of the symptoms "are very similar" to those for colds and flu, the NHS warns. Unfortunately, with free testing no more available to the general population, most people who want to confirm if they have the virus will need to buy their tests from pharmacies or retailers. Lateral flow tests are cheaper and faster but they are not as accurate as PCR tests, which are more expensive and take more time to return a result.

It takes on average five to six days from the day of infection for symptoms to show, but in some cases it can take up to 14 days. Symptoms vary across the population and most people will develop mild to moderate illness and recover without hospitalization. However, if you are worried about yours or your child's symptoms you should call 111 or check online. The NHS says if your child "seems very unwell, is getting worse or you think there's something seriously wrong", you should call 999.

The NHS originally listed fever, cough or loss of sense of smell or taste as the three tell-tale symptoms of Covid, because they were either very common or almost exclusively caused by the virus. The list has now been updated to include the following:

The NHS says that a high temperature means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back, while a continuous cough is defined as coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours.
